Early 20th century bathrooms and kitchens were not the
opulent places they are in today's modern home. Kitchens
were utilitarian and sparse; baths were more about hygiene
than high style.
That said, there is fortunately quite a lot of room for
interpretation. Even the most die-hard Arts & Crafts purist
would be fibbing if he or she didn't admit that the
Quartersawn Oak Craftsman-style kitchen with the hammered
copper hood and drawer pulls that they saw in a
magazine didn't make them salivate just a bit.
In the bath, a period-inspired look with some innovation
in glazes and finishes, period-style fixtures, reproduction
lighting, and a blend of modern amenities and Craftsman
details can be made sophisticated, understated, yet spectacular
in every way.
